INTRODUCTION
WarpSpeed is a shareware keyboard utility which will dramatically
speed up the repetition rate of your keyboard, and it does it
without overrun. What is "overrun"? Overrun occurs when you
release the key you have been holding down and yet the key
continues to repeat. In addition, WarpSpeed does it using less
than 1K of memory.
HOW TO USE WARPSPEED
To use WarpSpeed type "warpsped" at the DOS command line.
WarpSpeed will load itself with a set of default parameters. These
defaults may need to be changed in order for WarpSpeed to work best
with some programs or to suit your personal tastes. If WarpSpeed
is already loaded then it will just set the parameters specified on
the command line and exit.
WarpSpeed is highly customizable. Parameters may be specified when
WarpSpeed is loaded or at any other time through the DOS command
line or a batch file. The following parameters may be specified to
tailor WarpSpeed to meet your preferences and software.
/on turn WarpSpeed on
/off turn WarpSpeed off
/delay=xxx "xxx" is a number from 0-255 specifying how long
to wait in 1/18's of a second before speeding up
(default is 4).
/fsdelay=xxx "xxx" is a number from 0-255 specifying how long
to take in 1/18's of a second while accelerating
to full speed (default is 18).
/overrun=xxxxx "xxxxx" is a number from 0-65534 specifying how
sensitive your software is to overrun. The more
likely your software is to overrun the higher
this number should be set. The repetition rate
may slow down depending on how high overrun is
set and how your software reads from the
keyboard. Generally speaking the default setting
of 38 works well for most programs and settings
above 100 will noticeably slow down the
repetition rate.
/rate=xxx "xxx" is a number from 1-255 specifying the
number of repetitions per second (default is 40).
/u unload WarpSpeed and reclaim memory
? display a brief description of WarpSpeed's
parameters, this will not load WarpSpeed.
Some examples:
* The Sunday morning driver
warpsped /rate=25 /delay=12 /fsdelay=36
Load WarpSpeed, set the keyboard repetition rate to 25
characters/second, set the delay before starting speedup to 12/18
(3/4) of a second, set the delay before reaching full speed to
36/18 (2) seconds.
* The interstate highway commuter
warpsped /rate=55 /delay=9 /fsdelay=9
Load WarpSpeed, set the keyboard repetition rate to 55
characters/second, set the delay before starting speedup to 9/18
(1/2) of a second, set the delay before reaching full speed to 9/18
(1/2) of a second.
* The hot-rodder
warpsped /rate=100 /delay=1 /fsdelay=9 /overrun=18
Load WarpSpeed, set the keyboard repetition rate to 100
characters/second, set the delay before starting speedup to 1/18 of
a second, set the delay before reaching full speed to 9/18 (1/2) of
a second, and reduce overrun protection to 18.
* Living in the fast lane, breaking the land speed record at
Bonneville flats
warpsped /rate=255 /delay=0 /fsdelay=0 /overrun=0
Load WarpSpeed, set the keyboard repetition rate to maximum rate of
255 characters/second, set the delay before starting speedup to
0/18 of a second (start speedup immediately), set the full speed
delay to 0/18 of a second (start at maximum rate immediately), and
set overrun protection to 0.
* Unload WarpSpeed and reclaim memory
warpsped /u
* Display brief description of WarpSpeed's parameters
warpsped ?
* Turn WarpSpeed off
warpsped /off
Selecting appropriate settings for your software and personal
preferences will take some experimentation.
LOAD ORDER
While it is impossible to give firm rules about loading memory
resident programs, generally speaking WarpSpeed will probably work
best if it is loaded first. If other memory resident programs also
request to be loaded first then some experimentation may be
necessary.
COMMON PROBLEMS
KEYBOARD REPETITION DOES NOT REACH SPEED SPECIFIED IN RATE=
PARAMETER
Whether or not the actual repetition rate reaches the speed
specified in the RATE= parameter depends on several factors,
including:
- The type of computer (PC vs AT vs 386)
- How the computer program (or DOS) reads from the keyboard
- How high the RATE= parameter is set to (255 is much harder to
achieve than 40)
- How high the OVERRUN= parameter is set. The higher it is set the
harder it will be to achieve the desired rate.
The maximum rate of 255 keystrokes per second is probably out of
the range of most programs even on the most powerful PC's currently
available. Most computers and the programs which run on them
cannot process keystrokes that quickly.
KEYBOARD REPETITION DOES NOT SPEEDUP WHEN RUNNING SOME PROGRAMS.
Generally speaking, WarpSpeed should speedup the keyboard
repetition rate for all programs. But, some programs, like
Smartcom take over one or more of the interrupts WarpSpeed uses.
There is nothing which can be done about this.
KEYBOARD OVERRUN OCCURRING
Increase the overrun protection by issuing the following command:
warpsped /overrun=50
If 50 is not adequate then increase it by 10-20 until an adequate
number is reached.
KEYBOARD REPETITION CONTINUES EVEN AFTER KEY IS RELEASED
Some keyboards, including the Omnikey/102, do not always generate
the correct key codes when a key is pressed. If this occurs then
press any key and the repetition should stop. This is probably
not a problem with WarpSpeed.
UNLOADING DOES NOT ALWAYS FREE MEMORY
For some reason some versions of DOS do not always free memory when
WarpSpeed is unloaded from a batch file. If this happens, try
loading and unloading WarpSpeed from the command line. WarpSpeed
will usually reclaim memory if it is unloaded on the last line of
the batch file.

REPORTING WARPSPEED BUGS
If you believe you have discovered a WarpSpeed bug or
incompatability with your other software, follow these steps:
1. Create a disk which may be used to recreate the problem. This
disk should include the following:
- Your copy of WarpSpeed
- Any other programs that must be present to recreate the problem
- A readme file describing the problem and how to recreate it
2. Send the disk to the above address.
THE USER-SUPPORTED CONCEPT
User-supported Software
User-supported software (also known as "shareware") is an
experiment in distributing computer programs based on these
beliefs:
1. That the value and utility of software is best assessed by
the user on his/her own system.
2. That the creation of personal computer software can and
should be supported by the computing community.
3. That copying of programs should be encouraged, rather than
restricted.
Anyone may legally obtain an evaluation copy of the program from a
friend or computer club. After you have had a chance to use and
evaluate the program in your own environment, you are trusted to
either forward a payment to FAB Software or to discontinue use of
the program.
Free distribution of software eliminates costs for advertising and
copy protection schemes. Users obtain quality software at greatly
reduced cost. They can try it out before buying, and do so at
their own pace and in the comfort of their own home or office. The
best programs will survive, based purely on their quality and
usefulness.
USER-SUPPORTED SOFTWARE AND DISK VENDORS
With an acknowledgement to Eric Isaacson, author of A86, on whose
documentation this next question and answer is based, we offer this
to those of you who have purchased WarpSpeed from a disk vendor.
QUESTION: "I bought this keyboard speedup routine from XYZ
software house, that advertised great software for $5 per disk.
What's going on here? Have I already bought a keyboard speedup
routine, or what?"
ANSWER: Well, no, not exactly. You've bought a disk that has
great software on it; you haven't bought the software yet.
WarpSpeed, like the vast majority of software offered by the $5 per
disk distribution houses, is free-distribution software, also known
as "shareware", or "user-supported software". That means I retain
the right to WarpSpeed, but I choose to let people pass it around.
I have no business relationship with any distribution houses. I
don't get a penny of the $5 (or whatever) you paid them for the
disk containing WarpSpeed. So I need and expect to be paid by you,
because I'm trying to make a living out of making and supporting
shareware products.
Many distribution houses do a poor job of revealing the shareware
nature of the software they sell. If you thought you had purchased
the software free and clear, you might feel justified in being
angry with them for having misled you. And you might look around
for houses that do a better job of informing the public. But I
hope you'll take the time to consider everybody's role in the
shareware marketing scheme. If you do, I think you'll conclude
that although you may have been misled, you haven't really been
cheated out of anything.
Shareware is great for authors like me who haven't got the
resources to run expensive ad campaigns. We simply cast our
programs to the winds. They are distributed at pracically no cost
to us. That's why we can charge a lot less than the cost of
"commercial" software.
Shareware is also great for customers like you. You can try out
the software before paying for it. You'll know that a successful
shareware product is good, because only satisfied customers pay for
it. The existence of shareware infuses healthy competition in the
entire software market, for both price and quality.
Finally, let's consider the distribution houses. They provide a
legitimate service, for which they charge a reasonable price. The
best houses act as librarians, evaluating and cataloguing software.
Most pay thousands of dollars for advertising. Their cut is far
less than the distributor's cut for "commercial" software (they
prosper because their volume is bigger). Most customers for the
distribution houses are repeat customers, who are aware of, and
happy with, what they are getting. If it weren't for your XYZ
House, you might never have heard of WarpSpeed, or might never have
figured out where to obtain it.
So I hope you'll be happy with shareware, and actively desire to
support it. You'll feel good about promoting a healthy situation
for everybody. And you'll encourage the best programmers in the
world to keep writing for you, instead of for the big corporations.
RESTRICTED PERMISSION TO COPY
WarpSpeed is NOT a public domain program. This software and User's
Guide is protected by both United States Copyright Law and
international treaty provisions. The software may be used or
copied only in accordance with the terms outlined below.

exception. FAB Software authorizes you to make archival copies of
the software for the sole purpose of backing-up your software and
protecting your investment from loss.
By saying, "just like a book", FAB Software means that this
software may be used by any number of people and may be
freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as
there is No Possibility of it being used at one location while it's
being used at another. Just as a book which can't be read by
two different people in two different places at the same time,
neither can the software be used by two different people in two
different places at the same time.
UNLICENSED USERS
Unlicensed users are granted a 30 day period in which to actively
evaluate WarpSpeed. If after 30 days of active evaluation,
unlicensed users should either license WarpSpeed or stop using it.
Active evaluation consists of actually using the software, not just
possessing it.
Regardless of whether WarpSpeed is licensed or not, it may be
copied and shared as described below.
BUSINESS USE, PRODUCTIVE USE, INSTITUTIONAL USE
Companies, schools, universities, government, and other
organizations are granted permission to copy the WarpSpeed programs
for use on other computers and at other locations in the company,
so long as:
1. The full registration fee of $20 has been paid for each and
every system on which the program will be used.
Corporate licenses and volume discounts are available upon
request.
INDIVIDUALS
Individuals are granted permission to freely copy the WarpSpeed disk
for their own evaluation or for others to evaluate, so long as no
price or other consideration is charged.
COMPUTER CLUBS
Computer clubs and other non-profit organizations are granted
permission to freely copy the WarpSpeed disk and share it with their
members for the purposes of evaluation, so long as:
1. No price or other consideration is charged. However, a
distribution cost may be charged for the cost of the diskette, so
long as it is not more than US $10 total. This includes shipping,
handling, and all other charges.
2. Club members who receive the programs are informed in writing
of the user-supported concept and encouraged to support it with
their payments.
3. The programs and documentation are not modified in any way and
are distributed together.
OTHER PRODUCTS FROM FAB SOFTWARE
If you like WarpSpeed then you may also like to try Newkey.
Newkey is a keyboard macro enhancer which simplifies the entry of
common keystroke sequences by allowing these sequences to be
assigned to any key desired. Then, when that key is struck, the
associated keystrokes will be played back. For example, alt c
might be defined as "copy ". Whenever alt c is struck, "copy "
will be played back, just as if you had typed it the keyboard.
Newkey allows customization of software packages, ready creation of
boiler plate passages, help menus, keyboard redefinition, cut and
paste, cursor speed up, screen blanker, extended keyboard buffer,
and other useful purposes. Macros may be created using the macro
editor or by recording the keystrokes as they are entered while you
actually do the task you want the macro to do.
MAJOR FEATURES OF NEWKEY 5.3
- Display macros allow you to build your own pop-up windows. They
can even be used to prompt for input. The display macro editor
makes it easy to build your own help and data entry pop-up windows.
- Menu macros allow you to build your own custom menu system. When
a menu pops up you are given a choice from selections defined when
the macro was created. Selecting a choice by using a moving bar or
typing the appropriate letter causes the associated macro to be
played back.
- Shorthand mode watches your keystrokes and when they match a
macro name, automatically plays back the macro. No special hot key
to enter, no wasted keystrokes.
- Full-featured macro editor allows you to edit your macros, even
they are being recorded. You can also move or copy other macros,
or copy the keyboard buffer into a macro.
- Ability to define almost any key, including many not normally
supported.
- Uses EMS memory for macro and screen buffers
- Fast key option speeds up cursor movement with no overrun.
- Date and time functions can be used to playback the date and time
in any format desired.
- Multi-character macros allows mnemonic names to be given to your
macros. For example, a macro named "salesrpt" could be used to
generate a sales report.
- Load and save macro files at any time, even while running other
programs. Macro files may also be loaded and saved in batch files.
- Cut and paste from screen to a macro
- Screen saver mode can blank the screen protecting the display
monitor from being etched with the current image.
- Customize Newkey to meet your needs. Most of Newkey's options
and hot keys can be easily customized to meet your needs.
- Full support for both the 84 and 101/102 key keyboards
- Execute macros from a batch file allowing programs to be run
automatically without any input from the keyboard.
- 128 keystroke type-ahead buffer, Pop-up in graphics mode, 64K
macro buffer, EMS support for macro and screen buffers, and many
more too numerous to mention
- Newkey supports a full range of macro functions. When a macro is
played back these functions can:
- Clear macros from memory
- Control shift status (alt, ctrl, and scroll)
- Load and merge macros from disk
- Save macros to disk
- Define a macro to a specific definition
- Set Newkey options from within a macro
- Delete a macro from within a macro
- Send a macro to the printer
- Wait for next key
- Wait for next key, but keep key
- Wait for specific key
- Wait for a fixed or variable number of keystrokes
- Turn cursor on/off
- Cut text from the screen to a macro
- Wait for up to MM:SS:HH to elapse
- Clear the screen
- Turn the screen off/on
- Beep
- Guard macros so that they will not be overwritten when loading a
new macro file.
Since its introduction in 1984 Newkey has consistently received
excellent reviews. In its latest major review of macro processors.
PC-Magazine, Sept. 29, 1987, in "Ram- Resident Macros for the
Virtuoso Keyboard" selected Newkey as the Editor's Choice saying
"It's ... an excellent keyboard enhancement program"
Newkey 5.3 will operate under all versions of DOS from 2.0 on and
will work with most software and all true IBM PC compatibles. For
$43.00 you will become a licensed user and receive the latest
version, including a printed manual describing all of Newkey's
features. If you are not completely satisfied, return Newkey
within 30 days for a full refund. Like WarpSpeed, Newkey is
distributed as shareware.
